About the Cockapoo

Cockapoos are one of the first doodle mixes and have been purposefully bred since the 1960’s. This lovable ball of fluff has been a family favorite companion ever since due to their affable nature! They are known for being intelligent, outgoing, friendly, and loving. They make the perfect companion for just about any and all environments and families as they’re small enough for apartment life in the city and adventurous enough for roaming the country with their people. Their activity level tends to extend to your desires, nature hikes and runs one day and couch snuggles the next. So long as they’re spending time with you, that’s what they love best! Cockapoos are a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix that is typically 12-25lbs with a “Teddy Bear” like appearance. The come in a wide variety of colors and patterns: buff/ cream, apricot, red, chocolate, black, phantoms, sable, merle, parti, and tri-colored. Their coats can be tightly curled, have a spiral/ loose curl, or be straight and will require lifelong grooming. Their coats tend to be allergy friendly for people with mild to moderate dander allergies. Owning a Cockapoo is a longterm commitment, the typical lifespan of a Cockapoo is 12-15 years although they can live longer.

Generations

As the Cockapoo is a mix breed you may come across generations such as F1, F1b, F2, etc. What does this mean?

F = Filial which means generation or generations after the parental generation.

Number (1,2, etc) = which generation beyond the original parental generation (Cocker Spaniel Parent and Poodle Parent)

b = Backcrossing, breeding back to one of the original parental generation breeds, most typically the poodle although in some cases it may be the cocker.

Multigenerational is typically used for anything 3rd generation and beyond. All of our Cockapoos are multigenerational as this is our preference. Our longterm goal is to work toward producing a consistent standard for the Cockapoo in appearance and temperament. This will be a long, slow process in collaboration with fellow Cockapoo breeders of First generation and Multigenerational Cockapoos alike. This will help ensure lower COI’s (co-efficiency of inbreeding) as our breed does not currently have closed stud books as the AKC requires. This allows us to breed to original parent generations and not cause a bottleneck of genetics.

Registration

Cockapoos are not recognized by the AKC as they are a mix breed.
